Why it’s news
Google has been the leader in internet search, almost since its founding more than 20 years ago—but a new AI platform is giving the search engine some competition.
AI platform ChatGPT released six weeks ago and has sent Google into a “code red” state of emergency to keep up. ChatGPT is an AI chatbot that answers questions in a simple text that anyone can understand rather than giving a list of links like Google.
Google is worried that this simplification could disrupt Google’s search engine as many people will start relying on the chatbot to quickly answer questions rather than sifting through Google’s many links to find an answer.
Five days after ChatGPT was released it amassed over 1 million users sending Google into panic mode.
Although the bot can answer questions quickly and effectively, users have realized that it still makes continuous errors. The bot is imperfect and cannot differentiate real news from fake news causing it sometimes to give the wrong answer.
Considering the high ability for mistakes, Google is hesitant to release its AI service for fear of hurting the brand’s reputation by providing false information.
Google will continue to work diligently on an AI service but wants it to be great before releasing it to the general public.
