Leadership expert Bill George and tech entrepreneur Zach Clayton have thrown down a challenge to emerging leaders.
In the new book True North: Emerging Leader Edition, the duo urges company heads to lead their organizations authentically and with purpose.
Emerging leaders do so by discovering their “True North”—who they are—and then finding their “North Star”—their leadership purpose.
George and Clayton implore leading with passion, compassion, and moral courage by being true to their values to reach their full potential as they take on great challenges and navigate complex issues.
Harvard professor Bill George, who authored the timeless classic True North, is the former CEO of Medtronic.
When asked by Fortune’s Alan Murray why he wrote the book, Bill George replied—
“We are witnessing a massive change in leadership from the Baby Boomers who have dominated for the past 30 years, to emerging leaders, which include Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z. The Baby Boomers’ style of command-and-control leadership is dead. Younger employees simply will not accept it or they will quit, which has contributed to the Great Resignation.
“Emerging leaders are moral leaders who are guided by a strong sense of purpose and values. They seek alignment with organizations whose purpose and values are congruent with their own. They focus on empowering their teammates and coaching them to reach their full potential.”
The book was published August 30, 2022, by John Wiley & Sons, with a foreword by political counselor David Gergen.
