Why it’s news
American drivers are starting to adopt EVs, with around 1.7 million driving in the U.S.
In another significant step in the nationwide adoption of EVs, Motor Trend Magazine has named the Ford F-150 Lightning as the 2023 Truck of the Year.
“The F-150 Lightning offers a host of features no gas—or diesel—powered truck can match. Be it for the campsite, the job site, or the homestead, the Lightning offers up a world of new possibilities for truck owners all while saving them money at the pump and likely at the repair shop, too. It’s a bargain many are going to find exceedingly easy to live with,” says Motor Trend’s Scott Evans.
It isn’t the first time the magazine has named an EV as an overall winner, with the Lucid Air EV as its 2022 Car of the year and Rivian R1T pickup as its truck of the year. Still, it is the first time an EV was unanimous amongst all judges, according to Yahoo Finance writer Pras Subramanian.
Ford started selling the lightning in May and has since totaled 13,258 in sales, with 2,062 sales in November, making it America’s best-selling truck.
The Ford F-150 Lightning starts at $51,974 for its base Pro model trim and a battery range of 240 miles. The higher model XLT has an extended battery life of 320 miles with a hefty price tag of $81,000.
Ford is accelerating its Lightning production with a goal of selling 150,000 of the EVs by the end of 2023.
