The Year Of the Podcast

Last year was a record year for podcasts, with more than 100 million active listeners in the U.S., and numbers are expected to grow.

Key Details

  • Podcasts continue to grow in the U.S., and 2022 was a record year for growth in the industry.
  • The U.S. is the largest podcast market and continues to get bigger, with 100 million active users in 2022, up from 82 million in 2021.
  • The number of podcast downloads increased by 20% in 2022, according to Triton Digital.
  • With the large number of U.S. listeners, podcast ad revenue is expected to increase from $1.4 billion in 2021 to $4 billion by 2024.

Why it’s news

Podcasts have been rising in popularity in the U.S., and 2022 was a record year for the digital audio content.

Many people across the globe have been opting to listen to podcasts over the last few years, and the audio content has taken off in America. The U.S. has the largest podcast market, with 100 million active users and over 5 million podcast options.

With the market quickly growing in the U.S., Triton Digital recently released a measurement of podcast growth and analytics in America.

“As the podcast industry continues to grow, we look forward to sharing these insights to help publishers and advertisers make more informed decisions,” says Triton Digital’s SVP of Measurement Products & Strateg Daryl Battaglia.

The company reports that the number of podcast downloads increased by 20% in 2022 and that the average listener tends to be male and younger than the general population.

The most popular genre for the year was news, with a 23% share, followed by comedy with 17%, and true crime with 15%.

The most downloaded podcast was NPR News Now, followed closely behind by Crime Junkie, The Ben Shapiro Show, Dateline NBC, and Morbid.

Podcast popularity rose quickly, and the company expects the popularity to continue to grow over the next few years.
