Putting Pelotons Into Hiltons

Peloton and Hilton announce a plan that will include Peloton placing its bikes in all Hilton-branded hotels.

Key Details

  • As stationary-bike-maker Peloton looks to expand its client base, the company announced a partnership with Hilton Hotels to place bikes in 5,400 Hilton-branded hotels.
  • Each hotel fitness center will have at least one of the stationary bikes.
  • The deal includes Hampton Inn, Embassy Suites, and Doubletree. Members of the Hilton Honors rewards system will be given a free 90-day Peloton trial.
  • Most Hilton locations will have a bike by the end of the year.

Why it’s news

As Peloton comes out of the pandemic boom, relatively new CEO Barry McCarthy has been making efforts to keep the company afloat.

During the pandemic, the company enjoyed a massive uptick in demand as customers stuck at home subscribed to the fitness company’s programs. However, when the world reopened, demand dropped.

Some Hilton locations already have Pelotons which serve as a test ride for some of the company’s customers. In 2022 alone, hotel guests have completed 1.6 million rides on Peloton bikes.

As part of the efforts to branch out, Peloton has shifted gears to a mass-market approach rather than a direct-to-consumer brand. Just last week, the company announced its products would not be sold in Dick’s Sporting Goods.

The company now also offers bike rentals, sells pre-owned bikes, and has partnered with Amazon for sales.

As the exercise equipment company tries to gain new customers, more changes in strategy may be on the way.

hiring continues

Private companies increased hiring during the month of April despite predictions for a cooling job market.

Key Details

  • Private payrolls increased by 296,000 in April, counteracting market predictions, according to a report from payroll processing firm ADP.
  • The Dow Jones estimate for the month was 133,000. April marked the highest monthly gain since July 2022.
  • The hiring surge comes despite the Federal Reserve’s attempts to slow economic growth and weaken the labor market to cool inflation.
  • So far this year, more than 800,000 jobs have been added to the market. The imbalance in supply and demand has resulted in solid wage gains that add to inflation pressures, CNBC reports.

The Fight Against ESG Continues

by Tyler Hummel Leaders Staff
Public Policy

Environmental, social, or governance (ESG) investing continues to be a hot-button issue, with Republican politicians like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis proclaiming newfound success in seriously challenging it.

Key Details

  • On Tuesday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed House Bill 3, the fulfillment of his months-long battle against ESG investing, which prevents social awareness and activism from being considered in investment decisions.
  • This comes after President Joe Biden enacted the first veto of his presidency in March against a bipartisan bill overturning a recent labor department rule, which allows retirement investments to consider ESG.
  • ESG has been hotly debated in the past year, with BlackRock CEO Larry Fink defending the practice as necessary and Vanguard CEO Tim Buckley dismissing it as an irresponsible investing tactic.
  • Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett is similarly skeptical of ESG and prefers to defer to protecting his stockholders.
  • Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted in November that “ESG is the devil.”
