A new book explores how the leadership of the 34th U.S. President can help us today.
The Problem
The world is facing numerous challenges, from the COVID pandemic to supply shortages, political disunity, climate change, recession fears, entrenched inflation, and uncertainty. People do not trust each other and they don’t know if there is an optimistic future to look forward to.
Dwight D. Eisenhower was one of the most influential and important leaders of the 20th century. He served as the Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Europe during World War II and subsequently served as President of the United States from 1953 to 1961.
He was also a beloved and trusted leader who guided the U.S. through some of its darkest times, building the country stronger in the aftermath and winning the presidency twice in landslide elections.
Policy strategist, security expert chairman emerita of the Eisenhower Institute Susan Eisenhower explores how her grandfather was able to lead the country through some of its most challenging transitions in her book How Ike Led: The Principles Behind Eisenhower’s Biggest Decisions.
“Susan Eisenhower, one of the president’s granddaughters and a scholar in her own right, has written a book that identifies and explains the personal qualities that made Eisenhower a great leader,” says the New York Review of Books.
Possible Solution
Susan Eisenhower dedicates her book to learning how her grandfather’s commitment to facts, consequences, accountability, and personal responsibility can help the U.S. now as we struggle with modern changes and challenges.
He was “informed by his heritage and upbringing, as well as his strong character and his personal discipline, but he also avoided making himself the center of things. He was a man of judgment, and steadying force. He sought national unity, by pursuing a course he called the ‘Middle Way’ that tried to make winners on both sides of any issue,” says the publisher.
“In this time of pandemic and divisiveness, Susan Eisenhower lovingly lays bare the essence of her grandfather’s leadership in war and peace—his singular devotion to the unity and security of the American people and the nation’s allies,” says The Wall Street Journal.
How Ike Led: The Principles Behind Eisenhower’s Biggest Decisions was published on December 13, 2022, by St. Martin’s Griffin.
