  21. Transitioning to a Remote Role

Remote work is a business trend that’s moving toward becoming the new normal for many teams. As Nicholas Bloom, an economist and researcher at Stanford University explains, “We see an incredible 42 percent of the U.S. labor force now working from home full-time . . . by sheer numbers, the U.S. is a working-from-home economy. Almost twice as many employees are working from home as at work.” CEOs seem to agree with these sentiments. 78 percent of 699 business leaders interviewed by PwC said, “remote collaboration is here to stay for the long-term.” Companies like Facebook and Twitter are some of the lead corporations moving toward offering full-time work from home jobs. These frontrunners provide evidence that the world is moving toward a more flexible work model. Upwork estimates that by 2028, “73 percent of all departments will have remote workers.”

This is great news for those looking for remote work opportunities. Below, check out a list of the top 20 companies providing work from home jobs.

1. Amazon

Glassdoor Rating: 3.9

Amazon’s Virtual Locations career page shows a wide variety of remote and partially remote jobs. The great news is they’re hiring in almost every department. This includes customer service, business development, IT, and human resources. In total, Amazon has over 1,500 work from home jobs to choose from. For this reason, it’s one of the best companies to look for remote job opportunities.

Benefits:

  • Minimum wage starts at $15 per hour
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage for all employees
  • 24/7 medical advice and counseling line
  • 50 percent 401K match
  • 20 weeks of parental leave

2. Adobe

Glassdoor Rating: 4.3

In 2020, the software company Adobe moved its 22,000 employees to full-time remote work in one weekend. While this transition isn’t 100 percent permanent, the business still offers plenty of work from home jobs located in the U.S. Expect to find openings for jobs that have a digital influence such as a developer or campaign architect. There are also many opportunities for consultants of all kinds.

Benefits:

  • Health insurance options
  • Parental leave
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • Generous time-off policy
  • Free education opportunities

4. Automattic

Glassdoor Rating: 4.3

WordPress, Gravatar, Tumblr, and WooCommerce are just a few well-known companies run by Automattic. One of the best things about the publishing platform development business is that it allows workers to choose where they want to live and work. In fact, unlike Twitter or Facebook, Automattic doesn’t have a corporate office. They’ve let employees work from home for years, paving the way for many “remote-first” companies. Undoubtedly, if you’re an engineer looking for remote work, Automattic is a good place to look for a job. Above all, the most common openings are for those with an engineering background. That is to say—the company needs all types of engineers including software engineers, growth engineers, and mobile engineers.

Benefits:

  • 100 percent paid healthcare plans including dental and vision
  • 2 to 3 month paid sabbatical every five years
  • Unlimited vacation time
  • Six-month maternity and paternity leave
  • Stipend for professional development

However, there’s not a vast list of openings at Basecamp like there are for Amazon. Because the company is smaller and well-known for welcoming remote workers, getting a job here is much more difficult. Nevertheless, keep checking their career page to see when new opportunities become available.

Benefits:

  • 75 percent of healthcare, dental, and vision is covered
  • 18 days of PTO
  • 30 days paid leave every three years

Transitioning to a Remote Role

Receiving a fully remote position opens up a world of flexible work options. Yet, for this reason, work-from-home jobs can present a challenge for people who spend most of their careers in an office. For example, daily disturbances like phone calls, loud neighbors, barking dogs, deliveries, and more can drastically affect a person’s productivity. Additionally, getting into a daily routine isn’t always easy when the alarm clock doesn’t technically have to go off at 6:00 a.m. Nevertheless, learning how to keep a regular schedule, block out distractions, and build strong connections with your team members is essential to remote workers’ success.
