How To Play And Win the Right Game

In his book, Winning the Right Game: How to disrupt, defend, and deliver in a changing world, Ron Adner gives readers insight into how to win in a changing competitive world.

Key Details

  • As the world is changing and competition between businesses extends beyond the typical industries, Adner gives the reader tools to deal with a new world.
  • The industries we are familiar with today are changing: television becomes streaming, banking fintech, and automotive becomes mobility platforms.
  • Competition that a business now faces is coming from new directions, and Adner encourages readers to be prepared.
  • If a business continues to play by the old rules, Adner says that the business won’t succeed in the new world. Instead, he encourages them to prepare for the new way of business.

Why it’s news

New technologies are resulting in new industries and new demands from buyers. Businesses are facing new competitors and challenges in a changing marketplace. Winning the Right Game gives readers the tools they need to create new strategies to face the challenges ahead.

Rather than being stuck on the defensive, Adner encourages readers to develop strategies that will allow them to be on the offensive.

Competition looks different than it once did. Adner tells readers that they will need to change their perspective on what that competition looks like and even what growth and leadership will look like in a changing market.

Through real-world examples, Adner provides a new approach to business. He gives insight into how these strategies saved companies like Wayfair and Spotify from being dominated by gargantuan competitors like Amazon and Apple or how Oprah Winfrey managed to move from television host to leader of a multimedia corporation.

These examples all have something in common—a new approach to the competition.

Adner is a professor of strategy at Dartmouth College and has written for the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, Forbes, and the Harvard Business Review. He has spent nearly a decade studying the causes behind success and failure in innovation.
Winning the Right Game was published by The MIT Press on January 3, 2023.

One Basketball Coach’s Lesson On CEO Longevity

by Hannah Bryan Leaders Staff
Entertainment

Mar 16, 2023

With the NCAA basketball tournament starting today without the presence of the Syracuse Orangemen, its coach Jim Boeheim’s recent retirement is a reminder that many company CEOs struggle to know when it is time to move on.

Key Details

  • In 2015, Boeheim announced that he would retire in three years, a decision the school supported.
  • However, it was not until this year that the 78-year-old coach officially retired.
  • The years following Boeheim’s 2015 announcement were filled with tumultuous seasons for the basketball team. A disappointing 17-15 season left the team out of the NCAA’s March Madness tournament this year.
  • Though Boeheim’s 47-year career was filled with success for the Syracuse Orange, the coach’s final years were reminiscent of other company CEOs who stayed longer than planned.
  • CEOs outstaying their welcome is a common dilemma for board members.
